Picture of Kef (March 2008)

Kef plays high energy Balkan dance music. Based in Eugene, Oregon, the ensemble's repertoire spans Eastern Europe from Albania, Greece and Macedonia to Bulgaria, Serbia, and Romania. No words in Western music can quite capture Kef's repertoire: it's a blend of mellow and frenetic tunes in odd meters and minor modes that inspire dancers and enthrall listeners. Kef's instrumentation is both traditional and innovative, including vocals, accordion, clarinet, trumpet, truba (a type of flugelhorn commonly used in the Balkans), cello, drum set, and tupan (large two-headed drum). Kef's members are an eclectic mixture of classically-trained, jazz-oriented, and self-taught musicians who have united over a common passion: the incomparable music of one of the most fascinating regions of the world.
